Future Earth Asia is a regional consortium of the global Future Earth network. Leveraging knowledge and capacity across Asia, we co-create societally relevant and evidence-based knowledge to empower policymaking and governance in the region.

Future Earth

Future Earth is a global initiative focused on advancing sustainability science and finding solutions to the most pressing challenges facing humans and the planet. With a strong legacy of decades of research on climate change, biodiversity, and earth science, Future Earth helps identify the safe and equitable operating space for humans to coexist with nature, understand the tipping points that can trigger irreversibility, and formulate science-based targets for policy and industry to implement climate change and SDG agenda.

The strength of Future Earth lies within the work of the community comprising 27 Global Research Networks, and National and Regional Networks (National Committees and Structures, Regional Committees and Offices), as well as the Early Career Network. These networks represent academics, policymakers, independent scholars, and students, all working across sectors and disciplines. They play a critical role in defining and advancing research and solutions in Earth system science and its component sub-systems and their nexus (land, ocean, food, energy, water, etc.), including human societies and health.

Vision: Future Earth’s vision is a sustainable and equitable world for all, where openly accessible and shared knowledge informs societal decisions.

Mission: To advance research supporting transformations to global sustainability.

Future Earth Asia Regional Committee

Advancing international collaboration to tackle regional sustainability challenges

The Future Earth Asia Regional Committee (FE-ARC) was launched in October 2023 to provide strategic direction for the Future Earth in Asia Community. The committee aims to accelerate the impact of evidence-based knowledge on policy, decisions and regulations and find new ways to accelerate sustainable development in Asia. The responsibilities of the FE-ARC are to facilitate regional networking, enable research, provide leadership and drive regional processes.

The FE-ARC aims to be an effective advocate for Asian interests in the global Future Earth platform and beyond. The Committee will ensure regional needs are integrated into Future Earth’s global agenda, and support coordination among local, regional, and global communities.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  • Identify strategic priorities for Future Earth in Asia Community (deliverables on activities in various domains, including capacity building, research collaboration, research infrastructure, and others)
  • Raise awareness of Future Earth agenda, activities and opportunities in Asian science, policy and practice bodies
  • Develop strategies for advancement and resource mobilization/fundraising for transdisciplinary projects and Future Earth activities in Asia
  • Voice regional low and middle income country (LMIC) needs and open a platform for their researchers and scientists to connect.
  • Assist in forging collaborative activities among Future Earth entities in the region

The FE-ARC currently comprises 15 members from various Future Earth entities across the Asia-Pacific region, namely, Future Earth National and Sub-national Committees in Australia, China, India, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Philippines, Taipei, Thailand and regional networks focused on land (GLP-Japan), atmospheric science (ILEAPS-Korea), marine (SIMSEA), integrated sustainability research (MAIRS-RPO), health and pollution (HI-ASAP) and water (Water Futures Program).

The four Future Earth Global Secretariat Hubs based in China, India, Japan and Taipei participate as non-voting members.

The FE-ARC is open to countries that do not have a Future Earth national committee or Global Secretariat Hub, allowing a wider range of countries to participate in the Future Earth global network.

Background

Each global sustainability challenge has local dimensions, and most solutions will be implemented at a more regional to finer scale. However, this cannot be effectively implemented without adequate information exchange and goal-setting with regional stakeholders and a broader view of global linkages. Establishing a regional framework that effectively and inclusively engages countries and stakeholders across the region is critical to informing regional and global sustainability conversations and actions to advance global sustainability transformation. With this recognition, regional structures were established early on after the launch of Future Earth.

History: Regional Structures for Future Earth in Asia

A Regional Center for Future Earth in Asia was established in 2014, hosted by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto, Japan, and headed by then-Professor Hein Mallee. The center was providing coordination and support for the national and local committees and regional initiatives in Asia. In 2015, a Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) was convened to provide guidance and advice for the Regional Center’s work. The RAC ended its term in December 2019 to make way for a Regional Committee with revised terms of reference. Despite an initial open call for this committee, this was not pursued due to the transition process that was happening at Future Earth during the period. In 2021, the Regional Center for Future Earth in Asia was dissolved, with most of its functions absorbed by Future Earth Japan Global Secretariat Hub.
