South Korea contributes to the Future Earth (FE) initiative primarily in collaboration with FE Asia Regional Committee (ARC) as well as projects related to spatial sustainability and SDG boundaries. The country has a strong focus on engaged social natural science and developing sustainability metrics based on the complexity framework and systems visioneering. Key stakeholders in South Korea include a consortium of diverse research institutions and universities, which collaborate on FE and non-FE programs alike.
Outside of FE, South Korea’s research focuses on mega-transition (e.g., low birth rates, changes in population structure), mega-cities (e.g., spatial polarization, smart cities, innovation in green technology), and mega-disasters (e.g., complex risks, large-scale disasters). Future prospects for the country within the FE framework include coping with the ARC initiatives on cross-cutting initiatives project on key SDGs and International Science Council’s pilot science missions in the Asia-Pacific region countries.
