The Sustainability Initiative in the Marginal Seas of South and East Asia (SIMSEA) is a program initiative dedicated to address the need for transformative change towards sustainability in the South and East Asia. SIMSEA, as a Future Earth regional initiative, brings together an international alliance of scientists to generate policy- and community-relevant knowledge for the sustainability of marginal seas. The initiative focuses on key areas such as sustainable fisheries, marine biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

SIMSEA’s vision of “Resilient Seas and Nations” extends to promoting the blue economy, fostering nations with ocean literacy, and ensuring healthy seas that support human well-being. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of appropriate governance structures to guide sustainable development in these regions. SIMSEA aims to empower coastal communities and contribute to the resilience and sustainability of the marginal seas in South and East Asia.

SIMSEA has recently started a joint project with Future Earth Coasts, PEMSEA, etc., “Developing a Meta-Network (Network of Networks) for Collaboration of Programs on Oceans, Marginal Seas and Coasts Under the Future Earth” granted by the Future Earth Cross-cutting Initiative Program. This Meta-Network project, from its basic nature, may largely contribute to and closely linked with the Meta Network Hub for SDGs in Asia (Meta Hub Asia) project.
