The TERRA+ School (Transdisciplinarity for Early careeR Researchers in Asia+ School) is a short-term intensive course on transdisciplinary research (TD) hosted by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) and Future Earth Japan.
The TERRA+ School builds capacity for transdisciplinary research, where researchers and societal stakeholders work together to address challenges facing humanity in Asia. It is envisioned to be a cultivation encounter, aimed at creating awareness of what transdisciplinarity can offer and the challenges involved in its implementation.
The course features lectures, workshops and interactive sessions on theories and practice of transdisciplinary research. It includes structured learning on tools and methodologies used in TD and introduction to the various TD research at RIHN. Field visits and direct engagement with local stakeholders offer participants on-the-ground exposure to real-world TD projects. Group work forms a core component of the course, with participants working collaboratively to develop transdisciplinary project concepts by the end of the program.
The program’s integrated curriculum guides participants through the essential dimensions of TD—“what to know,” “how to do,” and “how to be.” Through lectures, workshops, field visits, and facilitated reflection, participants develop a deeper understanding of co-production, systems thinking, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of diverse knowledge systems. Case studies and open discussions highlight not only successful examples but also real-world challenges, allowing participants to gain honest insights into navigating power dynamics, working with community partners, and designing research that responds directly to societal needs.
Since its launch in 2019, the TERRA+ School has been held annually and, as of 2024, has engaged a total of 80 participants from 15 countries across Asia and beyond. The growing alumni network has fostered ongoing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-regional partnerships, contributing to the development of a vibrant community of practice committed to advancing transdisciplinary research for sustainability.
